Celery Juice - the trend that is here to stay.
I know some people are rolling their eyes at the thought of juicing celery juice every morning and a little over a year ago, I would have been in the same boat. I was SO skeptical when I first heard of this ‘trend’ which originated from The Medical Medium (Anthony William). However, at the point I was at in my IBD journey I was willing to try anything, and MAN I’m happy I did.
Anthony William says the magic number is 16. 16 oz of celery juice every morning on an empty stomach. Why? Anthony’s website answers this question for us: “Because celery juice, when consumed in the right way, is a powerful and miraculous healing remedy and people are noticing the benefits it provides, such as clearer skin, improved digestion, less bloating, sustained energy, better mental clarity, weight loss, and stable moods, just to name a few.”
I have been drinking celery juice every day for a little under a year now and almost always get questions whenever I post about celery juice on @anextrapinchofsalt. I have gotten a few requests to compile all of this information in a blog post for future reference, so below I will go through a Q & A of the most common celery juice questions I have received.
Q: What juicer do you use?
A: I use the Breville juicer.
Q: Do you add anything else to your celery juice?
A: NO. Do not add anything else to your celery juice – it will not have the same benefits as when you drink it by itself.
Q: Can you buy celery juice from the store?
A: Only buy celery juice from a store if it is being juiced in front of you. Celery juice doesn’t have the same benefits when you buy it pre-juiced off the shelf.
Q: I have been juicing celery for about five months. Has it helped you?
A: YES. I would say it is hard to measure how much it has helped my UC in particular because when adding it into my daily routine I was not keeping everything else constant and you don’t see the long term benefits immediately. I do know for a fact that it helps with my acne, energy, and anxiety A TON. Whenever I go a couple days without it I breakout, feel more fatigue, and have much more anxiety. This makes me think that it does help my UC because of the strong connection between the gut, skin, and mood.
Q: Does it taste good?
A: It depends on both the person and the celery. I actually just had someone message me the other day in disbelief of how good it tasted. I find it quite refreshing myself! It tastes how you would expect celery juice to taste. Make sure you are buying firm ORGANIC celery – it should have that satisfying crisp break if you were to snap it in half if that makes sense.
Q: Every time I drink celery juice I am almost immediately sick to my stomach. Does that go away?
A: Yes. When I started to drink celery juice I would be sent running to the bathroom after only a couple sips! Celery juice is POWERFUL and sometimes you need to start small if your body has a little more to detox. Medical Medium has a podcast on celery juice for free (I would recommend listening) and he talks about starting small with 5 oz if this is happening and building your way up to 16 oz. If 5 oz is still hard he recommends starting with cucumber juice – but with the goal of eventually transferring over to celery juice.
Q: Can you only make it the day of?
A: It has the most benefits when it is made fresh. That being said, we are human. If you have a busy weekend or are going on a road trip, juice some a day or two ahead to make your life a little easier. <3
